Although born in Cobham, Surrey, Thomas spent his childhood in Montserrat and went to school in Antigua and then to boarding school. Thomas met Joyce in India while serving in the Army. They married in Scotland and spent the first thirteen years of their married life travelling aroung England and Germany. In 1959 they migrated to Australia and Thomas left the Army so that his children could have a settled education. Thomas was employed by a large glass manufacturer, ACI, and eventually became a manager of one of their divisions. He was retrenched in 1976 and decided to purchase a sports store which he and Joyce owned till 1983 when they both retired.
