Ian was the grandson of Joseph Grant, a very successful businessman in California, USA. Ian was Headboy at Winchester, got a 1st class Honours Degree at Oxford, reading Latin and Greek. Although American, Ian had a friend at Oxford who was a Colonel in the Irish Guards and, thus, was able to be commissioned into the Irish Guards in January 1941. Like his father he was a keen golfer, playing off a handicap of two but he only played for fun. Ian was killed on 18 July 1944 shortly after the invasion of France to liberate Europe from the Germans. He is buried in the Military Cemetary at Ranville.
