James, the eldest son, was a Major in the Army. He married Jane, daughter of W. Woodward of Clogh Prior, Co. Tipperary, the third person of that name since their arrival in Ireland with Cromwell. Jane's mother was Mary Legge, cousin of the Earl of Dartmouth. James had the estate of Grainge, near Castle Otway.
Like his eight brothers, he was of great size, being over six feet in height. He saw much service, being engaged at the Battles of Dettingen, Fontenoy, Feltenbal and Culloden. He received several wounds. He died at Rapla in 1763, a half-pay Major in the Duke of Cumberland's Regiment of Horse. He left two sons. Will dated 28/6/1757, proved 28/3/1763.
