Neil Otway educated at Kings College, married Raewyn Cox in Thames in 1955. In 1961, he purchased his own business comprising two trucks engaged in the cartage of coal from the Maramama Coalfields to the Auckland Gas Company. There are now four truck and trailer units involved in bulk haulage serving Auckland Hospitals, New Zealand Forest Products and James Hardie Ltd. In 1972, he was successful in obtaining the first bulk wine trans-shipping contract in New Zealand for Montana Wines Ltd. and pioneered the shipping by road tankers of liquid sugar and bulk wines between the Hawkes Bay and Poverty Bay areas and Auckland, eventually operating throughout the North Island for all the major wine companies. The Tanker side of the business was sold to the New Zealand Express Company in I976. At that time the Company, which is now known as Trans Otway Limited, became involved in the refrigerated transport business by purchasing an old established Company, Meat Distributors Ltd of Otahuhu. This purchase brought the fleet total to some fifty units but with rationalising, by placing larger more economical type vehicles on the road, the fleet total is now some 25 units; mostly specialist temperature controlled units, the balance being the coal truck and trailer units. All the units operate from the modern office, despatch and workshop block set on two acres of land in the main Wiri Industrial area just to the west of Manukau City. NEIL and RAEWYN have four children:
