Murray James William Otway was also educated at Waihi College and Flock House. He then served a four-year apprenticeship as a builder after which he went to the South Island and worked on high country stations, mainly "Mesopotamia", for five years. Murray then spent a year at Scott Base in the Antarctic, with the D.S.I.R. as a Base maintenance man and dog handler. He had many interesting experiences while there including an eventful trip with the dog team to visit two U.S. Navy ships; but for quick thinking and the courage of the dogs, this trip may have ended in tragedy. After the Antarctic, Murray spent a year in Great Britain and the Continent. He married Susanne, daughter of John and Fay Fairhall of Blenheim. He has now taken over the family farm at Waihi. Murray and Susanne have a boy, Hamish, aged 2.
