Athol William (Bill) Otway, the elder son of Charles and Daisy Otway, was born in Auckland 1922, being educated at Newmarket School and then Auckland Grammar. Bill had four years serving with the Air Force during World War 2, three years of which was spent overseas on Lancaster bombers with No.75 N.Z. Squadron R.A.F. On returning to New Zealand in 1945, Bill married Lona, only daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Jim Boyd, one of the original farming pioneers of the Te Akau district. After a period on his father's farm at Matira, Bill and Lona took up a "Rehab" farm at Trig Road, Waihi, in 1947; they are still living on the property in semi-retirement while a son, Murray, runs the sheep and cattle farm. Bill and Lona have four children:
