As a young man, he resided for a time in Australia and was involved in breaking-in wild horses. While he was engaged in this occupation, he suffered severe head injuries from which he never fully recovered, with the result that he spent his remaining years is psychiatric care - passing away on 21st September 1934. at what was then known as the Avondale Mental Hospital. Hugh was unmarried.
