Alexander Loftus was also educated at St. Columbia School and Trinity College, Dublin. He qualified as a Doctor, joining the Royal Army Medical Corps. During World War I he served in France and subsequently in India and West Africa where he invented a vaccine that eliminated Yellow Fever. He also invented a very widely used Army latrine called the "Otway Pit". He retired from the Army in the twenties and lived at Londonderry where he died after World War II.
He married Bessie Norah Hickman, daughter of Major Devereux Walter Hickman. They have two children.
